| New Doctor |

|
Yep, he'll do just fine. He's different enough, quirky enough and I believe he has the acting chops (having seen him on stage in The History Boys) to pull it off and give it a new spin. And I was totally there when he said that he would be spending the next six months studying the history and universe of the show and developing his take on The Doctor.

| Torchwood: Lost Souls |
[10 Sep 2008|11:22pm] |
One of "those" days at work (yes, again) when I didn't get home until gone 8.30pm. So I downloaded the podcast of the Torchwood special episode on Radio 4 and settled down to listen for a bit of relaxation.
( Spoilery bit )
Talking of the LHC, I'm still here. Though maybe it's the alternate universe version of me. How do I tell?!

| A Fun Saturday! |
[06 Jul 2008|12:16pm] |
Well, that was a really great day! The intention had been to meet up with a friend, have lunch, then take in the matinee of Avenue Q. After threatening wet weather early on, the clouds cleared, the sun came out, and instead of sitting in a restaurant for lunch, we decided to grab sarnies and watch the Pride Parade. Fantastic! Some really impressive costumes and floats and loud (ear-shatteringly loud on occasion) music.
We took in part of the concert in Trafalgar Square (Sandi Thom), and a speech by Sir Ian McKellen, then off we went to the Noel Coward Theatre for Avenue Q. Brilliant, silly, puppet-porn! But also sweet and charming and beautifully acted and sung (including Daniel Boys, formerly of Any Dream Will Do fame).
After that, we eschewed the possibility of stage-door-hogging to hotfoot it back to Trafalgar Square in the hope that we could catch the final episode of Doctor Who, which was playing on the big screen. We got there just as Freema Agyeman was doing her intro! Yay! I missed the first few minutes of the dialogue as we were making our way through the crowds to find a good spot to stand (anywhere to sit had been bagged much earlier) and spent the next hour laughing, crying, cheering and clapping with the thousands of other people in the Square. An amazing experience! What a brilliant day!

Next time I'll just barge off the bus. This morning I let a woman with a couple of kids go ahead of me and as the older one pushed against me, I slipped, half landed on the kerb and ended up on my knees with pains shooting up my left leg from a twisted ankle. It wasn't really the kid's fault. The bus was very full and everyone was pushing to get off.
Hobbled around all day, in between wondering whether I should just go off to A&E, and managed to get home reasonably in one piece and put a can of cold Coca-Cola on it. Amazing properties in cold cola! It feels much better, but still sore. If it's still swollen and painful tomorrow, I can see me spending my Saturday in the hospital trying to get an X-ray.

Hmmm, I'd like to say that this was a great episode. Or maybe it was a dud. I'll never know, since I set the VCR to record it last night, sat down with my lunch to watch it today and "WTF? Big Brother?!"
Yes, I managed to tape the wrong channel. Sigh. Maybe I'm technologically challenged or maybe it's not so suprising when there's Channel 4, More 4, More 4+1, Channel 4+1 and maybe even Channel More4+1.5. But I felt sure I had it set to the right one.
I wonder when these channels will stop proliferating? They can't be getting many viewers and it's no wonder so many good shows get cancelled because they can't get the ratings.

| Work. Sigh. |

Work has been *insane* for the last two weeks. I'm knackered. And the rest of this week is looking as bad.
I don't have the stamina any longer!

| End of Christmas |
[06 Jan 2007|12:28pm] |
6 January always feels like the real end of the Christmas holiday - it's Twelfth Night and time to take down the decorations. Though, from the day I go back to work on 2 January until the decs come down, it always looks a bit sad to have the tinsel and tree up, but I'm too superstitious to take them down before!
Also had to renew my Travelcard today, so I've now put my credit card in a dark room with a cold flannel on its forehead.

John Barrowman - Reflections from Broadway |
] |
My downstairs neighbours were playing loud thumpety-thump music this afternoon, with all their windows open. So I opened my windows too (it's been a lovely sunny day today, so they needed to be wide open), got out "Reflections from Broadway" by John Barrowman, and turned the stereo up loud. Very loud. JB belting out "Boy from Nowhere" and "Sunset Boulevard" - fabulous stuff! What a set of pipes!
John Barrowman - 1. Thumpety-thump music - 0.

| Travesty! |
[05 Feb 2006|10:38am] |
I just can't believe that John Barrowman has been voted off Dancing on Ice. He and his partner Olga were the best couple in it, with a lovely partnership that was developing really well. Their routines were exciting and fun and, as Christopher Dean said, the show has lost its best performer.
I'm not sure why I feel so annoyed and upset by this. After all, it's just a stupid reality TV show. Maybe it's because I feel that John and Olga worked so hard and so deserved to go further, especially as the judges have been telling them that each week - that they were obviously "front-runners" and "likely to go all the way with the show". Then they turn round and three of them vote not to keep them! Absolute travesty of a decision.

| Update on resolutions |
[20 Jan 2006|09:18pm] |
|
I've been reasonably good with my resolutions so far. I have walked to and from the station most days rather than take the bus and have used the stairs more. Not all the time, but more, so that has to help. Haven't lost any weight yet because I haven't quite kept to the diet. I blame the chocolate cherry liqueurs. And the Wine.

| Resolutions |
[31 Dec 2005|05:14pm] |
I always make resolutions - I always break them. Ho hum. It's a tradition, so I suppose I'd better do it!
1. Lose the 4lbs I put on over Christmas (actually need to lose 11lbs in all). 2. Take more exercise (could be an easy one if I stopped hopping on the bus quite so often and walked more) 3. Get kitchen done. And central heating boiler. And carpets. And furniture. (Probably too much there for one year, but it gives me options) 4. Writing - do it. 5. Learn Html (have the book and have already been considerably helped by patient friends!)
That's more than enough, and mostly achievable.
To all my friends: you've enriched my life more than you can possibly know. Here's to 2006!

| Why is it so hard . . . |
[31 Dec 2005|11:40am] |
to give things away?
Following my overhaul of my clothes cupboards and some old boxes of things, I'd sorted out a lot of things for the charity shop. Duly this morning I hauled two large bags of books and other stuff up the High Street to a well-known charity shop, with the intention of going back later with the clothes, only to be given a frosty reception and be told that they weren't really taking anything at the moment. My suggestion that it might have been helpful to have put a notice to that effect in the window to stop people lugging stuff half a mile only to be rejected, was met with a look that can only be described as "confused", as though keeping people informed about these things was an alien concept.
Since the other charity shops within walking distance are closed for the next couple of weeks, I'm stuck with large bags of clothes which I had hope to get rid of as I certainly won't be going back to the first one. Ever.

I braved the crowds at the sales today and went up to Oxford Street to look for a pair of shoes. Nothing too exciting, just some plain navy court shoes mostly for work. Could I find such a thing? Of course not! I could find pointy shoes, perfect for genies or people with nice narrow feet (ie not me), or shoes with heels as high as a tall and very high thing. Or both. And there didn't seem to be anything in navy, only black, and I have more pairs of black shoes than anyone really needs.
I did see some lovely boots by Lulu Guiness in Selfridges. Dark turquoise blue, beautiful soft leather, non-pointy toes, heels highish but not "Naomi Campell falling off a catwalk" high. And they were reduced - from £450 to £250! A mere snip. I tried them on of course and was quite pleased that they were rather uncomfortable or I'd probably have been sorely tempted to buy them, even though I don't have a single thing that they could be worn with.
So I came home with a new jacket which had been substantially reduced (from M&S), some new underwear, socks and tights (from M&S) and some nice long-sleeved tee-shirts in various colours (from M&S). Hmmm, I'm seeing a pattern there. Ooh, and I also bought the boxed sets of Battlestar Galactica Season 1 and Season 5 of The West Wing (since Channel Four have skipped from Season 4 to Season 6). Both were at extremely good prices (HMV sale) though maybe if I go to Play.com or Amazon I'll find both cheaper. So I won't go and look.

| Snow! |
[27 Dec 2005|10:03am] |
Snow, snow, snow!
There was just a light dusting when I got up this morning (later than intended) but now it's snowing for real, big snowy flakes. It probably won't settle, but it's pretty.
I was intending to cart all my sorted-out stuff to the charity shop today, but I think I'll have to go to Plan B instead. Just need to decide what Plan B is.

Gross and Keeley - Give the Dog a Bone |
] |
I had originally intended a very quiet day, maybe a walk, tidy up the place, then just veg out in front of some unwatched stuff I'd taped from ages ago. But for some reason I felt all get up and goish and decided to crack on and clear out my clothes cupboard - something I've been meaning to do for ages. Months ages. Years ages. Several hours later and I have sorted all the boxes that were stored in the back, thrown out old shoes and clothes I should have got rid of years ago and now have a huge pile of things to take to the charity shop tomorrow. Actually, I think it will take more than one trip. *Very* satisfying.
Tomorrow I must start clearing out the "junk" cupboard and see if I can get that to look half-way tidy as well.
